Today in the United States, we are in the midst of an immigration crisis; the new administration was elected on the basis of constructing a physical barrier to keep immigrants out, and there are pending initiatives to implement travel bands that will prohibit individuals from certain countries to enter the United States, solely based on their country of origin. It is a unique time in America, as immigration is on the forefront of international current events. Because of this, there are more voices than ever in the scholarly conversation of borders, government agency, and immigration. As of right now, the scholarly conversation seems to be led by Dr. Michael Sandel, who is a Harvard professor. He explores the philosophical jurisdiction made for national borders, and he has 60 other voices from over 30 countries that are contributing. Though I was initially intrigued by his thinking, it led me to what I want my project to be about: humanity's strive to obtain divine power. By exploring texts such a Paradise Lost, Genesis, and Frankenstein, I want to illuminate the repercussions of divine appropriation that the authors illustrate, and how politicians attempt to control immigration is strikingly similar.
