Today in the United States, we are in the midst of an immigration crisis; the new administration was elected on the basis of constructing a physical barrier to keep immigrants out, and there are pending initiatives to implement travel bands that will prohibit individuals from certain countries to enter the United States, solely based on their country of origin. It is a unique time in America, and immigration is on the forefront of international current events. With the help of Mr. Diaz-Williamson, Mr. Biglari, and Mr. Mathis, research, and my volunteer experience, I intend to explore a series of questions: What are borders? What are their goals? What agency to borders have today? My desire to delve into the topic of immigration and borders stems from my passion for human rights and my experience volunteering with undocumented workers. For my senior project, I intend to engage in different initiatives to help immigrants who are struggling to make their way in the United States because of systematic flaws. By immersing myself in philosophical questions about what borders are and the history of human movement, I am confident I will be able to go into my experiential learning with extensive knowledge in the true meaning of immigration.
